‘A Minecraft Movie’ Overtakes ‘Captain America’ to Top the 2025 U.S. Box Office

“A Minecraft Movie” continues its dominance at the North American box office in its second week of release. The film adaptation of the popular video game reclaimed the number one spot after earning $80 million, despite the release of five new films in theaters.
This impressive figure comes even with a 50% drop from its opening weekend, which brought in $162.7 million.
According to Variety on Sunday (April 13, 2025), the movie, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has now grossed $281 million domestically and $550 million worldwide.
After just ten days in theaters, A Minecraft Movie has officially become the highest-grossing film of 2025 in the United States, overtaking Captain America: Brave New World, which previously led with $199 million domestically and $410 million globally.
However, on a global scale, A Minecraft Movie currently ranks as the second-highest grossing film of the year. The top spot remains held by the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2, which has amassed a staggering $1.89 billion since the beginning of the year.
The success of A Minecraft Movie has brought renewed momentum to the U.S. cinema industry, which had experienced sluggish performance earlier in the year. Two weeks ago, box office revenues were still trailing 2024 numbers by 11% and 2019 numbers by 40%. Today, the gap with 2024 has narrowed to just 0.5%, although the gap with 2019 remains at 31%.
Hollywood now turns its attention to several upcoming major releases, including Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, Thunderbolts, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, which are expected to further boost box office earnings in the coming months.
Coming in second place this weekend is The King of Kings, an animated biographical film about Jesus Christ featuring voice performances from Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, and Pierce Brosnan. The film debuted with $19 million and received an A+ rating from CinemaScore.
Third place went to The Amateur, the latest film starring Rami Malek, which earned $15 million domestically and an additional $17.2 million internationally, bringing its total global earnings to $32.2 million.
Meanwhile, Warfare and Drop claimed fourth and fifth place, earning $8.3 million and $7.7 million respectively in their opening weekends. They were followed by The Last Supper in sixth, which brought in $6.15 million ahead of the Easter holiday.
A Minecraft Movie is a fantasy adventure comedy based on the 2011 sandbox game Minecraft by Mojang Studios. The screenplay was written by Allison Schroeder, Chris Bowman, and Hubbel Palmer.
The film follows four unique characters—Garrett Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—who are unexpectedly transported into the blocky world of Overworld. There, they must embark on a magical quest alongside Steve (Jack Black), a master crafter, facing threats such as Piglins and Zombies in order to find their way back to the real world.
