A Must-Do for a Sumba Visit: Tips for Watching the Sunrise at Tanarara Hill

Holiday Ayo - Watching the sunrise is a must-do when visiting Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

The expansive savanna landscape, blue skies, and pristine nature often captivate tourists, especially those who enjoy nature tourism.

Tanarara Hill is located on the Kambata Tana-Karipi Road, approximately 66 kilometers from Umbu Mehang Kunda International Airport.

By motorcycle or car, the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes.

Tanarara Hill is a perfect spot for viewing the sunrise because of its high elevation and its location directly facing the eastern horizon.

So, from this vantage point, you'll see the dawn rising from behind the hill, with no trees obstructing your view.

Tips for watching the sunrise at Tanarara Hill

1. Don't be late

Wherever you're looking for the sunrise, the most important thing to remember is not to arrive late.

Because, if you're a few minutes late, the sky will already be turning reddish, meaning you'll have missed precious moments to see the dawn break.

Given that Tanarara Hill is quite far from the city center, it's best to arrive before 4:00 a.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time).

If you're staying in downtown Waingapu, such as near Umbu Mehang Kunda International Airport, you should leave by around 2:30 a.m. WITA at the latest.

Based on Kompas.com's experience, by around 3:58 a.m. WITA, the sky will already be starting to brighten even though the sun hasn't yet risen.

2. Wear white.

White or cream clothing is usually the best color choice for outfits with natural landscapes. The bright colors contrast nicely with the savanna.

It's best to avoid wearing dark or even colorful clothing, as dark colors will make you blend in with the surrounding soil.
