Australian PM Apologizes to Jewish Community in Bondi Shooting Aftermath

Holiday Ayo - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has apologized to the Australian Jewish community and the wider community following the Bondi terror attack.

"As Prime Minister, I feel a heavy responsibility for the atrocities that occurred during my time as Prime Minister, and I apologize for what the Jewish community and our nation as a whole have experienced," Albanese said, as reported by AFP on Monday (December 22).

"The government will work every day to protect Jewish Australians, to protect their fundamental rights as Australians to be proud of who they are, to practice their faith, to educate their children, and to fully participate in Australian society," he said.

A recent report based on court documents stated that the two suspects in the December 14 mass shooting, Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed, allegedly trained for the attack in rural areas of Australia.

Police documents released on Monday (December 22nd) local time state that the two suspects conducted "firearms training" in what is believed to be a rural area of New South Wales before the shooting.

Released photos show the suspects firing rifles and moving in what authorities described as a "tactical manner."

The two suspects also recorded a video last October in which they denounced "Zionists" while sitting in front of an Islamic State (ISIS) flag and explained their motivation for the attack.

According to police documents, the two men made a nighttime "reconnaissance" trip to Bondi Beach days before the mass shooting.

Albanese, in a recent statement to reporters, said he would push for tougher new laws establishing "serious offences for hate speech" and extremism.

"We will not let ISIS-inspired terrorists win. We will not let them divide our communities, and we will get through this together," Albanese said.

Meanwhile, Australian police announced the transfer of Naveed, the sole surviving suspect, from hospital detention to prison.

Naveed, 24, is undergoing medical treatment under police supervision after being shot while carrying out the attack with his father last week.

Sajid, Naveed's father, was shot dead by police at the scene shortly after orchestrating the mass shooting.

Australian authorities have charged Naveed with various criminal charges, including terrorism and 15 counts of murder.
