Controversy Surrounds New Indonesian History Book as Culture Minister Fadli Zon Asserts Indonesia Was Not Colonized for 350 Years
Efforts to rewrite Indonesia’s national history have once again drawn public attention amid ongoing debates over the nation’s historical narrative. In this context, the Ministry of Culture has launched an academic publication claimed to have been compiled independently, without government intervention.
The Ministry of Culture officially introduced a book titled History of Indonesia: National Dynamics in the Global Current during an event held at the Ministry of Culture building in Jakarta on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon emphasized that the book was entirely written by professional historians. He assured the public that there was no political interference or government direction involved in the writing process.
According to Fadli, the historical manuscript was prepared by academics and researchers from various universities across Indonesia, representing diverse scholarly backgrounds. All contributors were described as having credible academic track records in the field of history.
He further revealed that a total of 123 authors participated in the history rewriting project, originating from 34 universities throughout the country.
Fadli added that this cross-campus collaboration serves as a key strength in presenting a more comprehensive, objective, and balanced historical perspective in line with the developments of modern historiographical studies.
