Emirates Leverages AI Technology to Predict Turbulence During Flights
Holiday Ayo - Emirates Airlines, one of the world's largest airlines, announced the latest innovation in its aviation technology, adopting artificial intelligence (AI).
This move comes amid concerns from experts that climate change is making severe turbulence more frequent.
Turbulence is caused by swirling "rough air" that can cause aircraft to pitch up and down or sway from side to side.
Thousands of aircraft experience severe turbulence every year, costing airlines up to £1.5 million in damage and delays.
Emirates, an airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, said its new technology provides pilots with "real-time data" that identifies areas of turbulence on their flight paths.
This approach is claimed to have helped reduce unexpected encounters with severe weather during flight.
Airlines typically use weather reports and radar to predict areas of turbulence while a plane is in flight.
However, Emirates claims its new method, which uses "machine learning, crowd-sourced turbulence data, and pilot reports," will improve prediction accuracy.
Emirates will provide "live, in-situ turbulence visualizations" in the cockpit, allowing crews to anticipate turbulence and prepare the cabin accordingly.
"We recognize that turbulence remains an ongoing challenge that cannot be completely eliminated, but we are committed to doing everything possible to minimize unexpected encounters with severe turbulence," said Captain Hassan Alhammadi, Emirates' Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, as reported by the Independent.
He added that while Emirates cannot promise turbulence-free flights, the airline's new strategy has contributed to a "significant reduction" in unexpected severe turbulence incidents over the past year, "helping to make travel safer and more comfortable for our customers," he said.
