First Helicopter Sighting in Indonesia Using Avtur Mixed with Pertamina Used Cooking Oil

Holiday Ayo - The Bell 407 helicopter is the first helicopter in Indonesia to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

In this case, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is collaborating with Wing Garuda Indah (SGI) and Bell Textron Inc.

SAF is bioavtur which comes from used cooking oil (UCO) or used cooking oil. At the inaugural charging event and demonstration flight of the SGI helicopter at the Bali International Air Show 2024 (19/09), the President Director of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Riva Siahaan, hopes that more SAF will be used in the aviation fleet, which will play a role in achieving a lower carbon footprint.

"If last year Pertamina SAF had successfully passed flight tests on commercial aircraft of the Boeing 737-800 NG type, now SGI has officially adopted Pertamina SAF for the Bell 407 helicopter and is the first helicopter to use SAF in Indonesia to reduce carbon emissions and support global efforts in fighting climate change," explained Riva as quoted by detik.com, Thursday (19/9).

Riva added that the distribution of SAF at Ngurah Rai Airport marks Indonesia's ability to adapt to the demands of the energy mix in the international aviation industry.

SAF is now a medium-term solution for aviation to reduce its carbon footprint, without requiring changes to aircraft, airport infrastructure or the jet fuel supply chain.

Pertamina SAF has met various international standards, including International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) certification for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and Renewable Energy Directive-European Union (RED-EU) programs.

Pertamina also ensures that SAF is safe to use, meets the standards set by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and is registered as Corsia Eligible Fuel (CEF) by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

"This synergy not only encourages sustainable aviation technology but also shows the joint vision of Pertamina Patra Niaga, SGI and Bell in creating a cleaner and more environmentally friendly aviation future," added Riva.

Meanwhile, SGI CEO François Lassale said the company's investment in SAF was in line with their commitment to sustainable practices and demonstrated a shared vision for a cleaner aviation future.

According to him, adopting SAF is not only a step in reducing carbon emissions, but also a commitment to a better future for industry and the planet.

"This collaboration is a strong example of how we can achieve meaningful environmental impact through strategic partnerships, and we look forward to expanding the use of SAF as part of our broader mission to lead the way in sustainable aviation across the region," he explained.
