Forgetting to brake, trains in India drive by themselves without a driver

Holiday Ayo - Panic struck railway officials in India on Sunday (25/2) after reports emerged of a train traveling at high speed and without a driver on board.

The train traveled for 70 kilometers before finally being stopped. The incident involving a goods train fortunately did not result in any fatalities or injuries.

As quoted by the BBC, this incident prompted India's national railway company to order an investigation. Previously, a video had circulated on social media showing a train traveling through a number of stations at high speed in India.

The train was seen traveling without the driver's control from Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir to Hoshiarpur district in Punjab on Sunday (25/2)

It is currently suspected that this incident occurred due to the driver's negligence. The Press Trust of India reported that the goods train was carrying 53 carriages filled with stone fragments.

The incidents occurred at 07:25 and 09:00 local time. The train was supposed to stop at Kathua for a crew change.

This is where the incident with the train moving without a driver started, when the previous driver forgot to press the brakes when getting off the train.

Relevant officials said the train started moving down the railroad track after the train driver and his assistant got off.

Then the train traveled at a speed of almost 100km per hour and crossed five stations without stopping. After notification spread at stations that there was a train moving without a driver, the train crossings along the route where the train was going to pass were immediately closed.

The train was finally stopped. For approximately two hours, almost all train crossings were closed to prevent further serious incidents and reduce panic among train passengers.

“The train was stopped after railway officials placed wooden blocks on the tracks to stop the train," said an official.

Officers on the ground used rocks and wooden blocks to help reduce the train's speed. Several sandbags were also placed in strategic places to reduce the risk of collisions.

Relevant officials in India are still investigating and identifying the factors that caused the train to move after stopping in Kathua. This is to avoid a similar incident from happening again.

Jammu railway station director and Divisional Traffic Manager Prateek Srivastava said strict action would be taken if the driver is found guilty of negligence and endangering the public.
