Holiday Ayo - South Korean (South Korean) prosecutors arrested former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun.

Kim was arrested for his alleged role in the declaration of military emergency by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol which resulted in a polemic.

Reported by Reuters, Sunday (8/12), Yonhap news agency reported that the special prosecutor's investigation team had questioned Kim, who voluntarily appeared at the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office at around 01.30 this morning local time.

The probe came after three minority opposition parties filed complaints with prosecutors against Yoon, Kim and martial law commander Park An-su.

They accused the three people of rebellion. Kim himself is considered the main figure behind President Yoon's declaration of military emergency.

He later stepped down after the controversial martial law was lifted, leaving South Korea's political situation uncertain.

If convicted, the crime of leading a rebellion is punishable by death or life imprisonment, with or without hard labor.

Opposition lawmakers accused Yoon of mobilizing military forces to block a vote by lawmakers seeking to overturn what they said was an unconstitutional martial law decree.

National police raided Kim's office on Sunday as part of an investigation into claims of treason against Yoon and top ministers.

On Saturday, President Yoon had delivered a televised address to the nation apologizing for his martial law decree.

He will not avoid legal and political responsibility for his actions. However, he did not express a desire to resign.

Yoon said he would leave his fate in the hands of the ruling party, which Ruling Party leader Han Dong-hoon later said was a promise to leave office early.

Han said Yoon would be 'effectively removed from his duties' and his party would consult with the prime minister to manage state affairs.

Yoon shocked the country on Tuesday night when he gave the military broad emergency powers to stamp out what he called 'anti-state forces' and political opponents who stood in the way.

He rescinded the order six hours later, after parliament defied the military and police siege to vote unanimously against the decision.

Yoon's declaration of martial law plunged South Korea, Asia's fourth-largest economy and a key US military ally, into its biggest political crisis in decades.

That threatens to destroy the country's reputation as a democratic success story.
