If you know the tarantella dance in Italy, surely you will think of a festive party in Italy. But you know, this folk dance has a much darker history that spans several centuries.
This dance is known as the spider dance, Tarantella comes from the Italian word tarantola, which means "tarantula." The tarantola gets its name from the town of Taranto in Puglia, where the bite of the local wolf spider (tarantula) is widely believed to be highly toxic and causes a condition known as "tarantism."
The beginning of this dance appears as a traditional ritual to cure a deadly disease. Because of this belief, the community is very strong and the ritual has been used for almost centuries.
But as time went on that belief started to wane, Tarantella eventually went from curing terminal illnesses to a pair dance - both a man and a woman, or two women performing at weddings and other celebrations. In fact, Tarantella is now considered unlucky by some to be danced on his own.
Accompanied by music, this fast spinning dance is characterized by light and fast steps, and flirtatious movements between the two partners. Usually, the woman carries a tambourine with her, and her quick movements are used as a way to stimulate her partner. On the other hand, men's gestures are made to attract the attention of their partners with their agility and tenderness. Sometimes they dissolve in joy until anything is forgotten, it's extraordinary.
