Human Rights Minister Supports Trial Program Sending Troubled Students to Military Barracks

Holiday Ayo -

Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai has expressed his support for West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi’s initiative to send troubled students to undergo education in military barracks. He emphasized that the policy does not violate human rights principles.

According to Pigai, the program could serve as a constructive breakthrough in instilling discipline in students, provided it does not involve any form of unlawful physical punishment.

“If this pilot program proves successful, we encourage the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to issue regulations so the policy can be implemented nationwide,” Pigai stated at the Ministry of Human Rights office in South Jakarta, Tuesday (May 6, 2025).

He added, “This idea holds strategic value. Between 2025 and 2035, we must focus on producing a generation capable of competing at an international level.”

Pigai also stressed that from a human rights perspective, the policy cannot be categorized as a violation, as long as it is not carried out with physical punishment or corporal punishment approaches.

“In principle, this policy does not breach human rights. On the contrary, it can be seen as an educational measure—provided it is executed properly and proportionately,” he concluded.
