Interesting Facts about West Kutai

Holiday Ayo - West Kutai Regency is a new regency resulting from the division of Kutai Regency. This district is an area adjacent to the new capital, North Penajam Paser Regency.

West Kutai Regency is bordered by Mahakam Ulu Regency in the north, Kutai Kartanegara Regency in the east, North Penajam Paser Regency in the south, and in the west it is bordered by North Barito Regency, Central Kalimantan.

Based on Law Number 2 of 2013, West Kutai Regency was expanded again to give birth to a new district, namely Mahakam Ulu Regency. After the division, only 15 sub-districts survived to join the West Kutai Regency.

Meanwhile, the Districts of Long Apari, Long Pahangai, Long Bagun, Long Hubung and Laham are part of Mahakam Ulu Regency. Of course that's not all interesting things from West Kutai.

1. Sendawar

Sendawar is the capital city of West Kutai Regency. Administratively, Sendawar is only an area, not an independent city, nor is it an independent sub-district. The Sendawar area covers part or all of the Barong Tongkok sub-district.

Sendawar also refers to the name of the village in Barong Tongkok District. Referring to data from the Central Statistics Agency for Kutai Barat Regency in 2021, two districts have a closer distance to the district capital of about 1 km, namely the Barong Tongkok village and the Simpang Raya village. The West Kutai government offices, including the bupati's office, are located in the Simpang Raya sub-district.

2. Commodity

West Kutai has large natural resources to be developed, especially in mining and agriculture. Mining in West Kutai Regency controls 48 percent of GRDP (Gross Regional Domestic Product), in the form of large coal mines in East Kalimantan.

From the plantation sector, the commodities that have been developed are rubber and oil palm. This commodity is a mainstay in East Kalimantan. The plantation area that has been utilized is 190,451 hectares.

West Kutai also has potential in livestock and fisheries. Potential livestock sector, especially cattle and pigs. West Kutai has an area of 3,188.27 sq km which is still possible to be used in the agricultural sector.

3. Ethnographic Museum

The Sendawar Ethnographic Museum is a public museum located in Sendawar, West Kutai Regency. The legal basis for the establishment of this museum is the Decree of the Regent of West Kutai Number 06 of 2010. The Sendawar Ethnographic Museum was originally managed by the Technical Implementation Unit of the Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports Office of West Kutai Regency.

Management was transferred to the Regional Technical Implementation Unit which was formed in 2016. The total collection of this museum reaches more than 188 heirlooms. The collection is a relic of the six sub-ethnic Dayak tribes in West Kutai such as the Tunjung Dayak, Benuaq Dayak, Bahau Dayak and Kenyah Dayak tribes.

Inside the museum there are also traditional sports equipment, accessories, agricultural tools and historical ritual tools. This museum also collects objects and ornaments of the Dayak Tribe who used to live in West Kutai Regency. This museum presents the collection as a form of education and recreation for the general public.
