Nepal Unrest Escalates: Politicians’ Homes and Parliament Set Ablaze

Holiday Ayo -

Mass protests in Nepal have spiraled into violent unrest, with angry demonstrators targeting both government institutions and politicians’ residences on Tuesday (September 9).

Former Prime Minister Bahadur Deuba and his wife, current Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, were among the primary targets. Videos circulating online show hundreds of protesters storming their residence. Deuba was seen being evacuated in a severely injured state, his head covered in blood.

The Nepalese military later intervened to evacuate cabinet members and senior officials after several houses and even the parliament building were set on fire by the rioters.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced his resignation following days of mass demonstrations, largely driven by students and young people who took to the streets on Sunday. Reports indicate Oli has fled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in an effort to escape the escalating violence.

According to NDTV, Oli’s private residence was also torched by protesters, along with the home of President Ram Chandra Poudel. Videos widely shared on social media capture scenes of vandalism and fires engulfing Poudel’s residence, as well as the Nepalese parliament building.
