Domestic airfare prices have surged once again. On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, ticket prices for the Medan–Jakarta route reportedly soared to IDR 10 million (approx. USD 630) per seat.

Based on monitoring via online travel booking platforms, a night flight operated by Garuda Indonesia from Medan to Jakarta was listed at IDR 10 million per ticket. The same price point persisted on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, with two available flights from the same airline.

By comparison, on Friday, April 11, 2025, the fare for the same route dropped to around IDR 2 million—still significantly higher than the usual rate of IDR 1.3 to 1.4 million per ticket on regular days.

Additionally, there are no available direct flights for the Medan–Jakarta route on Sunday, April 13, 2025.

As an alternative, some passengers opted for transit through Kuala Lumpur. On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, tickets from Medan to Kuala Lumpur were priced at IDR 1 million, while connecting flights from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta cost around IDR 5 million—bringing the total to IDR 6 million, still IDR 4 million cheaper than the direct route.

This drastic and disproportionate increase in airfare has drawn public criticism and raised concerns, especially with the Eid al-Fitr holiday season approaching. The government is being urged to take immediate and concrete measures to regulate airfare pricing and ensure air travel remains accessible and affordable for the public.
