Planning a Vacation Abroad? Here Are 4 Types of Visas You Need to Know
Holiday Ayo - A total of 106 countries worldwide still require Indonesian citizens (WNI) to obtain a visa.
A visa is an immigration document that demonstrates that an individual's arrival has been approved by the government of the destination country.
Visas are issued by the authorities of the destination country and stipulate entry permits for foreign nationals for a specific period, depending on the purpose of their visit. Visas are enforced to maintain the security and stability of a country.
"Every Indonesian citizen is required to comply with visa and stay permit requirements in the destination country," explained Achmad Nur Saleh, Coordinator of the Public Communications Function of the Directorate General of Immigration, as quoted from the website of the Directorate General of Immigration, Ministry of Immigration and Community Services (Ditjenim Kemenimipas) of the Republic of Indonesia, Monday (22/12).
With the approaching Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 holiday seasons, the Directorate General of Immigration added that thorough travel planning and preparation of immigration documents are key to a smooth and safe vacation.
"Thorough travel planning and checking necessary documents are the keys to a smooth and safe vacation," said Achmad.
Here are the types of visas you need to know:
1. Regular Visit Visa: A visa that must be processed in advance at the destination country's Embassy or Consulate before departure.
2. Visa on Arrival (VOA): A visa obtained and paid upon arrival at the airport or border entry point of the destination country.
3. e-Visa: A digital visa sent via email after the online application process is approved.
4. E-TA: An electronic travel permit, usually a simple online authorization, rather than a full visa, that must be obtained before departure.
"Always double-check the official immigration website of the destination country, or their Embassy in Indonesia, for the most accurate visa information. Visa policies can change at any time," concluded Achmad.
