Putin Accused of Planning to Attack Ukraine's State Nuclear Power Plant

Holiday Ayo - The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, accused before the United Nations (UN) that Russian President Vladimir Putin was planning to attack nuclear power plants in his country.

Zelensky warned of dire consequences.

"Recently I received another worrying report from our intelligence. Now Putin seems to be planning attacks on nuclear power plants and their infrastructure, aimed at cutting off the power grid," Zelensky told the UN General Assembly as reported by AFP, Wednesday (25/9).

Zelensky, who delivered his speech in English, said Russia was using satellites to collect detailed images and information about Ukraine's nuclear infrastructure.

"Any critical incident in the energy system can lead to a nuclear disaster, such a day must not happen," Zelensky said.

"Moscow needs to understand this, and this depends in part on your determination to suppress the aggressor," he said.

"This is a nuclear power plant. It has to be safe."

Putin previously warned that Western countries would go to war directly with Moscow if they allowed Ukraine to attack Russian territory with Western-made long-range missiles.

Putin said such actions would change the nature and scope of the conflict. Zelensky has been pleading with Western allies for months to allow Kyiv to fire long-range Western-made missiles, including US-made ATACMS missiles and British-made Storm Shadow missiles, deep into Russian territory.

The use of long-range missiles, according to Kyiv, aims to limit Moscow's ability to launch attacks.

In some of his harshest comments on the issue, as reported by Reuters on Friday (13/9), Putin said such a move would drag Western countries that supply Ukraine with long-range missiles directly into the war, because of satellite targeting data and the missile's actual flight path programming must be adjusted by NATO military personnel because Kyiv does not have that capability.
