SpaceX's Starlink Internet Service Comes on Royal Caribbean Cruises

Holiday Ayo - Royal Caribbean Group announced that it will use SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet network. This satellite constellation transmits an internet network in orbit, to provide internet connectivity to guests and crew on its cruise ships.

The company based in Miami, United States will use Starlink Maritime services. This is a new service installed on ships, allowing ship passengers to access the internet.

As cited from Techcrunch, this service will cost the company a fee of 5 thousand US dollars per month. Meanwhile, the hardware installation fee for a dedicated terminal will cost you 10 thousand US dollars.

The Starlink Maritime service, developed by Elon Musk's company SpaceX, is claimed to offer a high-speed internet network of up to 350 Mbps.

Although the Starlink constellation is not yet functional at sea (as on container ships), SpaceX plans to provide that capability in the Northern Hemisphere by the end of this year and the Southern Hemisphere in early 2023.

Meanwhile, Central America, South America, Indonesia, Malaysia, and several regions in Africa are not on the Starlink internet service coverage map.

Royal Caribbean Group said it will deploy this service across its Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises brands, with installation expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023.

In June, the US Federal Communications Commission authorized SpaceX to provide mobile internet networks. The granting of this permit further smooths out SpaceX's plans to expand its services to commercial airlines, shipping vessels and trucks.

Previously, Starlink has also collaborated with T-Mobile to provide internet network for this telecommunications company in the United States. T-Mobile US, will use SpaceX's Starlink satellite to provide network access to mobile users in several states in the United States.

In fact, Indonesia has also explored cooperation with Starlink to provide a network for domestic internet providers. The recent collaboration between Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, was intended to build digital infrastructure in Indonesia.
