Tomohon, the Most Extreme Meat Market in Indonesia

Holiday Ayo - What do you think of when you hear about markets? Of course we agree that the market is a place to make buying and selling transactions. Is it a market that sells various kinds of raw food or a traditional market, or is it a modern market like the ones we find around us. However, there is one market that is considered the most extreme and invites a lot of curiosity from various parties. It's called Pasar Tomohon, the meat market with the most extreme nickname.

Generally, traditional markets are used to sell basic food ingredients that we are familiar with. Such as rice, chicken, beef, vegetables and so on. There is also a market that is used to sell used goods which has its own target market. But very different from those in this market. The Tomohon Faith Market has its own characteristics, namely suppliers of unusual animal meat, such as reptiles, dogs, porcupines, and so on.

This traditional market actually has the name Pasar Setia Tomohon. In this market there are some foodstuffs that are sold and are not ordinary. Because, there is dog meat, cat meat, bat meat to rat meat. Still not extreme enough? At Tomohon Market, you can find monitor lizard meat and python meat, you know!

It is not without reason that this meat is sold freely in the Tomohon market. But indeed in Minahasa itself it is famous for this processed meat. Usually the local people will make this dish using rica-rica spices. For example, like dog meat. They will call it by the name RW or rintek Wuuk. This meat will later be cooked with a mixture of chilies, shallots and garlic, turmeric, lemongrass, lime leaves and other spices.

Unlike the rat meat sold in this market. Even though it's rat meat, they sell different rat meat. The ones being sold are forest rats marked with the Kawok sign. This meat is known to have a different way of serving.

For bat meat, the way it is presented is by burning it, which is called Paniki cuisine. There is also something very special, namely the meat of pythons and monitor lizards. Indeed, this meat is not every day on the market. But of course it will be very scary for those who are not used to seeing it on the market.

It turns out that python meat is mostly enjoyed by local residents. Moreover, they use a spicy taste that comes from a mixture of cayenne pepper, galangal, shallots, lime leaves, coconut oil and lemon grass. It is the same with monitor lizard meat which is served as a typical Minahasa food.

Indeed, only in North Sulawesi can we find a market containing extreme meats including snakes. However, the problem is research states that the sale of exotic meat certainly has a detrimental impact on health and the environment.

However, it turns out that much has changed in Tomohon Market compared to a decade ago. Some types of meat here are difficult to find again because of criticism after criticism that comes in. Not only for selling protected animals but also for the sadistic practice of slaughtering dogs in front of other visitors who will buy the meat.
