Trump Gives Relief, TikTok Will Not Be Blocked in the US Tomorrow

Holiday Ayo - The social media platform TikTok should have been permanently blocked on June 19 in the US, because it has not complied with the law on TikTok divestment and blocking.

The permanent blocking of TikTok in the US seems unlikely to happen in the near future because the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, has again given TikTok a 90-day extension to comply with the US national security law.

This is the third time Trump has extended the deadline for ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, to sell TikTok's operations in the US to a non-Chinese company.

If not, TikTok is threatened with being permanently blocked in the US. This decision was announced directly by White House Spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, in an official statement this week.

Leavitt said that Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to ensure that TikTok remains accessible to US users.

"As he has said repeatedly, President Trump does not want TikTok to simply disappear (be blocked)," Leavitt said, as reported by CNBC, Wednesday (6/18).

"This extension will last for 90 days and will be used by the government to ensure that the sale agreement can be completed, so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe," Leavitt continued.

If calculated, the new deadline for TikTok is Wednesday, September 17, 2025. In the next three months, TikTok must sell its operations in the US to a non-Chinese company, or be blocked.

However, Trump can also give TikTok more time.

This deadline extension was carried out to meet the requirements of the National Security Law called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (Protection of Citizens and Applications Controlled by Foreign Competitors), which was signed by Congress and the previous President, Joe Biden.

This law defines TikTok (a subsidiary of Chinese ByteDance) as a threat to national security and controlled by a foreign adversary.

The law also requires ByteDance to sell TikTok to a non-Chinese company, or TikTok will be banned from operating.

Service providers such as Apple, Google, and US cloud providers will also be banned from supporting TikTok, including providing hosting and distribution of the application.

TikTok has actually faced an initial deadline since January 19, 2025, the day before Trump was re-inaugurated as US President.

As a result, on January 20, TikTok was blocked nationwide in the United States. The application was even removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

However, shortly after, Trump gave the first extension for 75 days, making the new deadline fall on April 5, 2025.

Approaching April, Trump softened again by giving a second extension, extending the deadline until June 19, 2025.

Now, as the deadline approaches again, Trump has announced a third extension, giving additional time until mid-September 2025 to complete the process of divesting TikTok from ByteDance.

Trump himself had hinted at extending the TikTok sale deadline in early May. At the time, Trump said TikTok had a "warm place in my heart" because it helped him win over young people in last year's presidential election.

"I have a little bit of a soft spot in my heart for TikTok because. Because, as you know, I won the young people by 36 points," Trump told NBC News.
