US Denies Visas to Pregnant Women Who Want to Give Birth in the US in Order to Gain Citizenship
Holiday Ayo - The United States is increasingly tightening its tourist visa policies. It's not just social media that's being monitored; pregnant women are also being affected.
The US Embassy in India announced that it will not process tourist visas for pregnant women nearing their due date, as reported by NDTV on Friday (December 12).
In a post on the platform X, the US Embassy in India stated that the US will not process visa applications if there are indications of system fraud, such as the tourist intending to give birth in the US to obtain citizenship.
“US consular officers will deny tourist visa applications if they believe the primary purpose of the trip is to give birth in the United States to obtain US citizenship for the child. This is not permitted," the US embassy in India stated in the post.
The Trump administration previously announced that it would review social media accounts when screening foreign nationals applying for student visas or H-1B visas for skilled workers.
The State Department said it will conduct an “online presence” review for applicants and their dependents, and that privacy settings on all social media profiles must be set to “public” for this screening to occur.
A notice on the website of the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico states that certain visa applicants must list all social media usernames or handles for every platform they have used in the past five years.
The warning states that omission of any social media information could lead to current and future visa denials.
“In each visa case, we will take the necessary time to ensure that the applicant does not pose a risk to the safety and security of the United States and that they have credibly demonstrated their eligibility for the requested visa, including that the applicant intends to engage in activities consistent with the entry requirements," a U.S. Embassy spokesperson wrote in a statement.
