Wanting to Leave the UNRWA Agreement, Israel Writes to the UN

Holiday Ayo - Israel withdrew from the 1967 agreement that recognized the existence and authority of the UN member agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has notified the United Nations (UN) that the country is withdrawing from the agreement.

Director General at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jacob Blitstein sent a letter to the President of the UN General Assembly currently held by Cameroon, Philemon Yang.

"[The letter] informs that Israel will continue to work with international partners, including UN agencies," said the letter, quoted by the Times of Israel, Monday (4/11).

Furthermore, in the letter, Israel claims that this step ensures that humanitarian aid facilities for residents in Gaza "do not compromise Israel's security."

"Israel expects the UN to contribute to and cooperate in this effort," the Israeli letter continued.

Israel's decision came after the Knesset passed a number of laws limiting or even prohibiting UNRWA operations in Israel.

This ratification has an impact on UNRWA operations in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Palestinian East Jerusalem.

Israel passes law halting UNRWA operations in East Jerusalem. Parliament also passed a law ending Israel's participation in the Comay-Michelmore Agreement in 1967.

This agreement mandated them to authorize and facilitate UNRWA's work. The ratification of this law occurred when Israeli troops continued to indiscriminately attack Palestine since October 2023.

As a result of their operations, more than 42,000 people in Palestine died, more than 100,000 people were injured, and Gaza is currently on the verge of a food crisis.
