The Facts of the Jambi Traditional House, Kajang Leko

Holiday Ayo - The Jambi traditional house is a testament to the greatness of the ancestors which has now become one of the cultural heritages of Indonesia's pride. Traditional houses are actually buildings that describe the character and values that exist in the community.

This Jambi traditional house is the residence of the Inner Tribe in Kampong Lamo, Rantau Panjang.


Quoting the book Traditional Jambi Regional Architecture (1986) by Djafar and Anas Madjid, the term Kajang Lako or Kajang Leko is related to the ridge of a house which is similar to the shape of a boat. The Inner people also often call this traditional house the term rumah lamo which means old house. Because based on history, the Kajang Lako house is estimated to be around 400 years old.

The Kajang Leko building is a square-shaped stilt house with a width of 9 meters and a length of 12 meters. The rectangular shape of this traditional house aims to facilitate the arrangement and function of the room which also adheres to Islamic laws. Kajang Leko as Jambi's traditional house has a roof ridge like a boat with a dividing ceiling and woven palm fiber which functions to hold rainwater and store equipment. The walls are made of wood, the frame and floor are made of bamboo, and the binder between the materials is made of rattan.

1. Slow room: a multifunctional room in front of the house for washing dishes, drying, storing furniture, tending plants, and waiting for guests.
2. Gaho room: a room that is used as a kitchen, storage of water tubes, and daily necessities which is located on the left side of the house.
3. Masinding room: a room that functions as a meeting place and special ceremonies for men.
4. The living room: the function is the same as the masinding room, but is reserved for women.
5. Transverse turning room: the main room for traditional ceremonies which is specifically for traditional leaders, religious scholars, ninik mamak and cunning.
6. The back room: three parts of the room in the main house which consists of the dining room, the parents' bedroom, and the girls' bedroom.
