Gunde Dance, Describing the Subtleties of Female Characters from North Sulawesi

Holiday Ayo - Gunde dance is a traditional dance originating from the Sangihe Islands Regency (Talaud and Siau Tagulandang and Biaro) North Sulawesi Province. Gunde or Unde means smooth motion, as smooth as a woman's character. Therefore, the Gunde dance is only danced by women, so it is often called Salaing Bawine (Salaiang in Sangihe means tar/movement, Bawine in Sangihe means Woman/Woman).

Gunde dance was originally a dance in the Mesundeng ceremony (ceremony of rejection of reinforcements) which usually lasted 7 days, on the fifth day the Gunde dance was danced as a form of worship to I Ghenggona Langi, Duata Sululuang (God the Creator of Heaven and the universe). In the past, the tribal religion in Sangihe, they believed there was a power greater and greater than human strength. So that power must be worshiped, that's what they call I Ghenggona Langi. In addition, Gunde Dance is danced at the Tulude event, either as part of the traditional line to receive guests or escort Tamo (Kueadat) and is also danced in its entirety as a complement to this ceremony.

During the reign of the kings, Gunde dance was appointed as a palace dance for purposes in the palace environment (including at the coronation of the king). Then the Gunde dance was used outside the palace as a dance to pick up guests, entertainment and performing arts and was even used in the church environment.

Gunde is danced by 13 people (12 ordinary dancers and 1 leader called pengataseng) in the order: the opening (salaing) Mamidura (respect) then salaing Bawine, which is a motion that describes the subtlety and majesty and subtlety of female character, then Salaing Sasahola (sahola), which describes joy or joy; then Saling Sonda which describes toughness; then Balang which describes the struggles and responsibilities of women because they will become housewives; then mutual Duruhang which describes the search for happiness; and finally Mamidura (respectfully) closing.

Gunde dance accompaniment music is external music (using accompaniment music outside of dancers) in the form of Tagonggong (ethnic musical instruments of the Sangihe, Talaud and Sitaro tribes) and Sasambo (ethnic songs of the Sangihe, Talaud and Sitaro tribes). The structure of the music (the rhythm of Tanggonggong and Sasambo) is the same as the name of the movement, namely the salaing Bawine motion, called lagung Bawine must be hit with a rhythm pattern and SasamboBawine. Likewise with Sasahola, Sonda, Balang and Duruhang. While Mamidura (opener and closing) is a regular punch or just a rally.

Gunde dance costumes consist of traditional Laku Tepu clothing (a half-calf length blouse and a skirt up to the ankles) and a shawl (Bawandang). Make-up according to need and reasonableness; cosmetic; On the head, a traditional bun called botopusige is placed, a crown (papilli) is placed and earrings are worn in the ears.

Although it is a classical dance, Gunde Dance is still preserved and maintained by the Sangihe community in North Sulawesi. The originality of this Gunde Dance is also still maintained, both in terms of motion, accompaniment, and the costumes used are still the same.

In its development, this dance is also often displayed at various events such as art performances and cultural festivals, both at the regional, national and international levels. This is done as an effort to preserve and introduce to the younger generation and the wider community the culture they have.
