Learning the History of Mount Merapi at Mount Merapi Museum

Holiday Ayo - Mount Merapi Museum was built in order to document everything about one of the volcanoes in Indonesia that are still active. It is also a place to learn more about other active volcanoes all over the world.

Here, you can learn the process of how a volcano comes to be and how it erupts. The museum is located at Boyong Street, Banteng Village, Hargobingun, Pakem, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia.



In Mount Merapi Museum, you can learn a lot about Mount Merapi from every angle, whether it is scientific angles, cultural angles, and mythological angles. The history of the mountain is documented here, and you can even see the effects and damages left by the eruptions. Indonesia is located within the volcanic ring of fire so it is important for people to learn about this in order to mitigate any kind of disaster.

Mount Merapi Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday. The operational hour starts at 08.00 a.m. and ends at 03.30 p.m., except for Friday, which ends at 02.30 p.m.

The entrance ticket is priced at 5000 IDR for domestic tourists and 10,000 IDR for foreign tourists.



Mount Merapi Museum stands on top of 3,5 hectares of land and is 4470 square meters wide. It is initiated by Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center.

The design of the building is unique, which was adjusted to the traditional customs and philosophies of Yogyakarta. It is in the form of a cone, like a volcano.

When you enter the museum, you will see a mockup of Mount Merapi. The mockup can even let out steam and rumble like a real volcano.

At the side, there are buttons, each with a year in which the volcano had erupted. If you press one button, the mockup will show you how the eruption was at that specific year.

In other rooms, you will see displays of different types of volcanoes. There is also room for tsunami and earthquake simulation.

The museum has many historical items in its collection; some of them are the things that were salvaged from the eruption in 2006.

Other things you can find there are volcanic rocks since 1930, old pictures of Mount Merapi from different eras, and equipment used to monitor the volcano, such as telescope, seismograph, and data processing device.

In the museum, you can also watch a short film called “Mahaguru Merapi”. This short film will show you how important and beneficial Mount Merapi is for the people and what happened when it erupted. You have to pay to watch this film, 5000 IDR for domestic tourists and 10,000 IDR for foreign tourists.
