Ruwatan, a Javanese Ritual to Release Someone From Curse and Misfortune

Holiday Ayo - Javanese society is not only known as a society that is gentle and has a noble character, it is also known for its mystical rituals. The influence of Hindu-Buddhist beliefs often colors their customs and culture.
Even so, some traditional heritages have been adapted to the teachings of Islam, which began to be widely embraced on the island of Java in the 17th century.
Among the cultures that are still preserved in several places on the island of Java until now is the ruwatan tradition. The word ruwat in Javanese means lose or detached. People who are diruwat mean people who are released or freed from divine curses, calamities, and sad conditions.
Javanese society also has various theories that form the basis for performing a ritual. Ceremonies or rituals that are carried out to avoid the impact caused by human error in Javanese society are called Ruwatan.

Diruwat means to be released. The implementation of the ceremony is called ngruwat or ruwatan, which means to release or free, which is to free or release from punishment or the curse of a god that causes danger, calamity or sad conditions.
The purpose of holding this ruwatan ceremony is so that someone who is diruwat can be freed or separated from the threat of danger (mala catastrophe) that surrounds him.
A person who for some reason is considered to be affected by succor/disgrace must be treated.
It is a traditional tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation by the Javanese community, in practice humans living in society are governed by certain rules, norms, views, traditions, or habits that bind them, as well as ideals that are expected to obtain goals and objectives.
Ruwatan is believed to be a means of liberation and self-purification from all calamities and misfortunes of life.
The ruwatan tradition is inseparable from wayang performances that tell about Murwa Kala which is the historical origin of the tradition. Because to carry out a puppet show requires no small amount of money, the ngruwat tradition is usually carried out together within the hamlet or village.
In today's context, there are many lessons that we can take from the ruwatan tradition. If in ruwatan someone who is going to be treated needs a puppeteer who is an expert in the field of ruwat, then to clean ourselves we can start from ourselves.
Being a person who has a noble personality and upholds the values and norms in his environment is indirectly able to make a positive contribution to the surrounding environment.
