Sokko Palopo, a Rare Culinary Typical Bugis Ahead of Ramadan

Holiday Ayo - Indonesia as an archipelagic country has many regions with their own characteristics. This also includes culinary matters, where each one of course has a variety of mainstay dishes. No doubt, the South Sulawesi region also has a unique culinary tour.

There are many special events or traditions to welcome the holy month of Ramadan. The Bugis people of South Sulawesi (South Sulawesi) are no exception.

The Muslim community in South Sulawesi often makes special food which is a tradition of their ancestors before entering the month of Ramadan named Sokko Palopo.

Sokko means glutinous rice and Palopo means brown sugar. Sokko Palopo is a typical food that is usually made before the fasting month. This food is made from white glutinous rice, but you can also make it using black glutinous rice.

Usually, sokko will be served with additional grated coconut, salted fish, and chili sauce. The delicious taste makes sokko one of the typical foods of South Sulawesi that must be tried.

Apart from being a relic of the ancestral traditions of the Bugis - Makassar tribes, it is also considered a symbol of gratitude to God. The sweet taste of Sokko Palopo means that fasting can run as a blessing for a whole month.

Soko Palopo is a traditional snack typical of the Bugis Makassar community. As the name implies, this simple snack consists of songkolo which means sticky rice, and palopo which means dipped, aka sticky rice, dipped in brown sugar sauce.

Nowadays it is rare to find people who sell soko palopo. However, this simple snack is still often served during special events. The taste is sweet and savory with sticky rice, making soko palopo also suitable to be served as takjil.

In the Bugis Life Cycle Ceremony which symbolizes happiness such as Birth and Marriage Ceremonies, this menu is always served. Palopo is made from thick coconut milk, brown sugar, and eggs. The combination of these three flavors symbolizes Sweet and Savory as a symbol of happiness.
