Legendary Super Sentai Series Will End Its Airing, Here's Why

Holiday Ayo - The Super Sentai series will end its airing after half a century on TV. The suspension comes during the 50th anniversary celebration of Super Sentai, which first aired in 1975 on TV Asahi.

Kyodo News reported on Thursday (October 30th) that profits from events, merchandise, and other related sources were not enough to continue production of the series.

Number 1 Sentai Gozyuger, which aired last February, is reportedly the final installment in the Super Sentai series.

Number 1 Sentai Gozyuger currently airs on TV-Asahi every Sunday morning with no announced end date.

Kyodo News reported that this information was obtained from interviews with people involved in the production of the series.

The names of those interviewed have not been revealed. TV-Asahi, Toei, Bandai, and the cast have not yet issued any statements or announcements regarding this sudden news.

The Super Sentai series aired on television since Himitsu Sentai Gorenger (1975-1977) and its successor, J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai (1977).

Both were created by the legendary mangaka behind Kamen Rider (1971) and Cyborg 009, Shotaro Ishinomori.

Throughout the history of Super Sentai production, there has only been one year without a new entry: 1978, which was spent creating Toei's Spider-Man in collaboration with Marvel Comics.

Following the success of Spider-Man and his giant robot, Leopardon, the giant robot concept was first introduced to Super Sentai in 1979 with Battle Fever J. Since 1979, each year has seen the baton passed from one hero team to the next in the franchise.

1993 marked the debut of Power Rangers, a television series adapting various Super Sentai productions for international audiences.

In recent years, Hasbro has distanced itself from Super Sentai and slowed production of Power Rangers to a halt.

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury was the first season to exclusively use new costume designs not created for Super Sentai, and 2024 was the first year without a new Power Rangers episode since Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers began.

Fan discourse has raised concerns about product sales for years, but today's news is the first time a source has allegedly confirmed the significant impact of ending the series.

In response to today's news, fans online expressed skepticism, sadness, and frustration as they mourn the loss.

Some remain hopeful that Toei will produce a new tokusatsu series to replace Super Sentai.

Others question whether the series is truly ending or whether it's a new hero team series under a new brand name.

However, nothing is known at this time other than the presumed end of a historic tokusatsu series.
