THE HISTORY OF MOUNT KRAKATAU
HolidayAyo.com - Krakatau is a small island group in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java. Krakatau is one of the world's most famous volcanoes.
Behind the beauty of Mount Krakatau, did you know the history of this mountain? Mount of Anak Krakatau is a caldera or volcanic feature formed by the large eruption of Mount Krakatau in the 19th century. When Mount Krakatau erupted in 1883, the eruption formed an underwater caldera. Later, this caldera will form mountains that rise to sea level.
Due to volcanic forces from deep within the earth, Rakata Island, one of the three islands resulting from the eruption of Mount Krakatau Ancient in the 5th century AD, developed into a new mountain made of basaltic rock. In this process, two other mountains were born from the crater in the same area, namely Mount Danan and Mount Perbuwatan.
According to the book Pustaka Raja Parwa, the height of this ancient Krakatau reaches 2,000 meters above sea level, and the coastline reaches 11 kilometers. The eruption left three small islands named Sertung Island, Rakata Island or Big Krakatau, and Panjang Island or Krakatau Kecil. The lava growth that occurred in the Rakata caldera formed two volcanic islands, namely Danan and Perbuatan.
Mount Danan and Mount Perbuatan then merged into one island with Rakata Island where Mount Rakata stands. The union of these three volcanoes is called Mount Krakatau. On August 26 to 27, 1883 there was a very powerful eruption that destroyed nearly 60 percent of Krakatoa's body in the middle and formed a caldera hole.
This eruption was measuring 21,574 times the atomic bomb and the eruption of Krakatoa was heard up to a radius of 4,600 kilometers from the center of the explosion in the Sunda Strait. The sound of the eruption was heard up to 4,600 km from the center of the eruption and could even be heard by 1/8 of the earth's population at that time. The eruption was very powerful; hot clouds and the resulting tsunami killed an estimated 36,000 people.
The eruption of Krakatau was followed by a tsunami that swept over 295 villages on the west coast of Banten, from Merak, Anyer, Labuan, Panimbang, Ujung Kulon, to Cimalaya, in Karawang, West Java.
