Comet, ChatGPT Competitor, Creates AI Browser for Android
Holiday Ayo - Perplexity has officially launched its artificial intelligence (AI)-based browser, Comet, for Android devices.
The app is now available for download on the Google Play Store, marking a major step for Perplexity in bringing an AI-powered browsing experience from desktop to mobile.
Comet is one of the first major AI browsers to make a serious impact on Android phones.
Perplexity previously released the desktop version of Comet for Perplexity Max users last July, before expanding it to general users the following month.
On Android, Comet offers several similar features to the desktop version. One of the most prominent is a built-in AI assistant that can be invoked while users are browsing.
This assistant allows users to ask questions about the current page, request article summaries, and even discuss content in various active tabs.
Furthermore, Comet also features a voice mode, allowing users to interact with the AI using their voice.
This feature allows for a more natural browsing experience, especially for those who want to quickly access information without having to type a lot.
However, the current Android version of Comet still has limitations. Users cannot yet sync their browsing history and bookmarks between the mobile and desktop versions.
However, Perplexity spokesperson, Beejoli Shah, stated that this is part of the development plan.
"We are currently preparing the cross-device sync feature and plan to launch it in the next few weeks," Shah explained, as quoted by detikINET from The Verge, Monday (11/24).
In addition to syncing, Perplexity is also working on several other important features for the Android version of Comet, including a full-fledged agentic voice mode and a built-in password manager.
For now, Android users can still use the operating system's built-in password manager as a workaround.
The launch of Comet on Android intensifies the competition for AI browsers. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Atlas is still available exclusively on macOS, while Google has begun embedding Gemini in Chrome's desktop and mobile versions, although its approach is more of an add-on feature than a full-fledged AI browser like Comet.
With the arrival of Comet on Android, Perplexity aims to expand the AI browser ecosystem beyond just browsing tools to include intelligent assistants that understand search context, user habits, and information needs in real time.
This move also strengthens Perplexity's position as a major player in the consumer AI technology space, particularly in the AI-based search and browsing segment.
