Former Military Prosecutor Detained by Israel for Leaking Video of Palestinian Prisoner Torture

Holiday Ayo - Israeli police have arrested Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, a former military prosecutor who leaked a video of Israeli soldiers torturing Palestinian prisoners.

Israeli media outlet Kan reported that Tomer-Yerushalmi was detained on charges of fraud and breach of trust, abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and disclosure of official information by a civil servant.

According to Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, Tomer-Yerushalmi was detained on Monday night (November 3).

"In light of last night's events, the prison service will act with extra vigilance to ensure the safety of prisoners in the detention center where he is being held," Ben-Gvir said, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Tomer-Yerushalmi came to attention after admitting to leaking a video of Israeli soldiers torturing Palestinian prisoners.

The video was leaked in August 2024, a month after prosecutors raided the Sde Teiman military detention center and detained 11 soldiers for questioning.

Sde Teiman is an Israeli prison known for frequently abusing its detainees. Eleven arrested Israeli soldiers were named as suspects in a case of violence against a Gazan.

The alleged violence included anal rape. The victim was hospitalized with broken ribs, a punctured lung, and rectal damage.

Tomer-Yerushalmi initiated the investigation, as reported by The Guardian.

The government, right-wing politicians, and conservative pundits accused Tomer-Yerushalmi of damaging Israel's global reputation by investigating the case.

After the soldiers were detained, right-wing protesters demonstrated outside Sde Teiman to demand that the investigation be halted.

Five Israeli soldiers have been charged with aggravated assault and inflicting serious bodily harm.

According to the independent Israeli media outlet Haaretz, Tomer-Yerushalmi, facing threats of attack, refused to open or promote investigations into other cases related to possible war crimes by the Israeli military.

Tomer-Yerushalmi himself withdrew from the case on Friday (October 31). On Sunday (November 2nd), she was reported missing by her partner and is suspected of having committed suicide.

Since investigating the case, a mob has launched attacks against her, mostly via social media.

The attacks temporarily stopped when she was reported missing. However, the attacks resumed after Tomer-Yerushalmi was found shortly thereafter.
