After 40 Years, MTV Announces the End of Music Broadcasting in the UK

MTV, the television network widely recognized as the world’s first 24-hour music channel, has officially announced it will discontinue airing music videos in the United Kingdom after nearly four decades of operation.
According to a report by BBC, five of MTV’s music channels — MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live — will officially go off the air on December 31, 2025.
However, the main channel, MTV HD, will continue to operate, focusing instead on non-music entertainment programs such as Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore.
The decision is seen as a reflection of the major shift in audience behavior, as today’s viewers increasingly prefer watching music videos on digital platforms like YouTube and various social media sites rather than through traditional television.
Historically, MTV first aired in the United States in 1981, quickly captivating global audiences with its innovative concept of music video broadcasting hosted by lively Video Jockeys (VJs). These VJs became cultural icons, with many later transitioning into successful careers in music and television.
The European version of MTV launched in 1987, followed by a dedicated UK channel in 1997. MTV’s golden era came during the 1990s, when it became a global pop culture phenomenon and the primary source for music trends, fashion, and youth lifestyle inspiration.
For many, MTV was more than just a television network—it was a symbol of evolution in the entertainment industry and the foundation of modern digital culture, bridging generations of young people with the ever-changing world of music.
