A Brief History of The Proclamation Manuscript Formulation Museum

Holiday Ayo - The Proclamation Manuscript Formulation Museum is located on Imam Bonjol Street Number 1, Menteng, Jakarta. During the Japanese occupation, this street was called Meiji Dori Street.

Before becoming the National Committee for National Conference, this building was the residence of Rear Admiral Tadashi Maeda. He was a high-ranking officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy in the Dutch East Indies during the Pacific War.

Rear Admiral Tadashi Maeda himself was a figure who played an important role in the independence of Indonesia, where he allowed his house to be used as a place for the formulation of the text of the proclamation of Indonesia.

This building has an art deco-style architectural appearance and has interesting details on building elements such as wall processing, wind openings, stair railings, doors, and windows.

But long before it became Tadashi's home, the building built in 1927 was used as the official residence of the British Royal Consulate.

Now the Museum for the Formulation of the Proclamation Manuscript is located within the Ministry of Education and Culture based on the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture.

When you first step foot into this building, it is true that the old impression is still felt. Visitors are immediately presented with a large room, to the right of the entrance is the room for the validation of the text of the proclamation. From that space, the history of the Indonesian nation is engraved.

On the first floor of the museum, there is an endorsement room. Visitors can see three wax figures of Soekarno, Hatta, and Soebardjo who are discussing the formulation of the text of the proclamation.

There is also a replica of the text of the proclamation in Soekarno's handwriting which is framed by thick glass in one corner of the wall.

Next is the typing room.

Here there is a wax statue of Sayuti Melik as if she was typing the text of the proclamation accompanied by BM Diah. There is also an old Philips radio from 1938, a piano where Soekarno signed the text of the proclamation, as well as private collections of figures.

Several important ancient buildings often had bunkers that were used as shelters in case of war. The former house of Admiral Maeda also has a bunker in the backyard of the main building.

The inner walls of the bunker have been covered with cement. Previously when it was pristine, the walls were ordinary soil. The bunker is quite small, only 2 meters x 4 meters.
