Explore the Mysterious Pawon Cave in Bandung

Holiday Ayo - There is a place you have to visit if you are traveling to Bandung. It is the exotic and mysterious Pawon Cave. The scenery of the cave is unexpectedly beautiful.

Pawon Cave is located in Gunung Masigit Village, Cipatat district. It is around 25 kilometers to the west of Bandung City.

It is said that the area of Bandung, including the Pawon Cave, was once a huge pre-historic lake. According to geologists, million years ago, Bandung was an ocean.

Then, tectonic activities of the earth plate happened and lots of pre-historic mountains emerged. The emerging mountains created a huge basin that became a gigantic lake. This lake is called Sundanese Ancient Lake, the area where it is believed to be where the Sunda Tribe began their civilization.

Since 2000, researchers have found at least 7 bones of ancient people inside Pawon Cave. You can see the bones inside the cave yourself. The bones are estimated to be around 10,000 years old and became one of the greatest geological phenomena in Bandung.

According to experts, the bones belong to the ancestors of Sundanese people. It is still being researched by Bandung Archeologists Association. Because Pawon Cave is still part of the research, you have to be very careful when you are in there and to treat the place with care.

The local people also believe that Pawon Cave is tied to the legend of Sangkuriang. The legend of Sangkuriang tells the story of a man named Sangkuriang who fell in love and tried to marry a woman named Dayang Sumbi, who surprisingly, was his own mother. The local people believe that one of the passages inside the cave was Dayang Sumbi’s kitchen.

If you want to enter Pawon Cave, you have to pay the entrance fee, which is IDR 6000, and the parking fee, which is IDR 2000.

You have to walk a little to the main location from the entrance. But the walk will be nice as you can see the beautiful scenery around the cave.
