The delicacy of Sroto Sokaraja, typical of Banyumas with the unique peanut sauce

Holiday Ayo - Sroto Sokaraja is one of the culinary specialties of Banyumas, Central Java, which has a characteristic peanut sauce that shakes the tongue. For this peanut sauce, it can be served with mixed sauce, but there is also a separate one.

Sroto sokaraja uses chicken and beef as the filling. The pieces of meat are mixed with a fine spice consisting of shallots, garlic, turmeric, candlenut, salt, and ground pepper, complemented by turmeric which makes the sauce yellowish.

Besides being eaten with ketupat, this soup is also served with red or white cantir crackers made from cassava. Next, bean sprouts and sliced celery are added, then doused with gravy and sprinkled with fried onions. Sroto Sokaraja is the name for a typical soto from the Banyumas area. This culinary one is adopted from Chinese cuisine.

The difference between Sroto and Soto in general lies in the sauce. While soto is usually served with chili sauce, sroto is served with peanut sauce. Peanut sauce is made from ground peanuts with chili and certain spices. This is what makes the sroto taste unique. The presence of peanut sauce makes the sroto taste savory and thick.

Not only that, what makes Sroto unique is the existence of diamonds or often called kupat. If soto in Semarang is served with rice, the sroto is served with kupat. This is the uniqueness that distinguishes between soto and sroto.

This sroto sauce is brown because of the peanut sauce that is also served. Thus, making the appearance different from Soto Semarang which has a clear sauce, or Soto Lamongan which has a yellow sauce.

Because it is fried in a short time, Tempe Mendoan is very suitable to be eaten with Sroto. The taste will be even more delicious if you add soy sauce and pieces of cayenne pepper. The famous Soto stalls that have been around for decades and are a regular in Sokaraja and surrounding areas are Soto Kecik and Soto Lama.
