Nikah Siri Trend on TikTok Sparks Concern, Parliament Demands Firm Action
The House of Representatives (DPR) is urging the Ministry of Religious Affairs and law enforcement authorities to take firm action against the increasing promotion of nikah siri (unregistered marriage) services openly offered on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. The phenomenon has raised concern among religious scholars who warn that the practice could lead to harmful consequences, especially for women.
In a viral video post, a TikTok account openly advertised nikah siri service packages, complete with facilities including venue and restaurant options for conducting the ceremony.
Anwar Abbas, Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), responded to the issue, stating that although nikah siri is allowed in religious teachings, the lack of proper requirements and legal completeness may render the practice haram and potentially harmful.
He emphasized that nikah siri should still be officially registered through the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA), stressing the importance of legal protection to prevent social and legal consequences that could negatively impact couples or children born from such marriages.
The pressure from the DPR and religious leaders is expected to push the government to strengthen oversight of illegal services exploiting regulatory loopholes and commercializing unregistered marriages through social media platforms.
